Hayles and Howe are delighted to receive the Humber Silver Salver for Heritage Fibrous & GRG Plaster work. Presented by the AIS FPDC on the 3rd February 2015 at the prestigious Plaisterers’ Awards for 2014. Awarded for the refurbishment and restoration of the Grade II listed Dominion Theatre in London. Carrying out the work over a five month period. Being the owners nominated plastering contractor for this interesting and specialised project was an honour for Hayles and Howe. Using original techniques the entire theatres plaster work returned to its former glory . Also taking advantage of modern technology and sustainable materials in line with our own and the theatres environmental policy.
Neo-Renaissance Restoration
Architectural brothers W & TR Milburn designed the historic theatre in January 1928. Opening in October 1929 as one of the largest theatres in London with a seating capacity of 2835. Continuing to work together over the years Hayles and Howe have enjoyed a long term working relationship with this Grade II listed building. Whenever required the team carried out regular ceiling inspections, restoration and consolidation works . Following the closure of a long standing show In 2014 the Nederlander Organisation decided to undertake extensive restoration of this Neo-Renaissance 1920’s theatre.
Recognised by the Theatre Trust
The Theatres Trust featured the restoration and refurbishment of the Dominion in its Winter issue 2014 of Theatres Magazine. Carrying on with the positive feedback the Trust’s Director Mhora Samuel was delighted that the refurbishment won the award. Therefore it recognises the importance of bringing in appropriately skilled, experienced and competent crafts people to secure the future of the nation’s important and unique historic theatres. Resulting in the judges comments including the following:
“A very comprehensive refurbishment has been completed. The main auditorium required extensive work and now looks stunning. If the Architects W and TR Milburn could visit now they would see their Dominion Theatre as it was at the opening in 1929. Actually it possibly looks better now, it is very pleasing to the eye.”
