The Award
Hayles and Howe are pleased to announce that the company has been awarded the Humber Silver Salver for Heritage Fibrous & GRG Plasterwork by the AIS FPDC on the 3rd February 2015, at the prestigious Plaisterers’ Awards 2014. The award is for the complete refurbishment and restoration of the Grade II listed Dominion Theatre in London. Which was carried out over a five month period. Hayles and Howe were the owners nominated plastering contractor for this interesting and specialised project. The whole Theatres plaster work has been consolidated and returned to its former glory using original techniques where possible. And also taking advantage of modern technology and sustainable materials in line with Hayles and Howe’s and the Theatres environmental policy.
The work
Bristol-based company Hayles and Howe Ltd were represented at the awards luncheon by MD David Harrison, Jenny Harrison, Mark Rossiter, Russell Hempstead, Boyd Rogers and Robin Harrison. Accompanied by Mr David Pearson the General Manager of Nederlander Dominion Limited. Along with the Dominion theatre building services Manager Richard Kiernan.
The historic, Dominion Theatre was designed by the architectural brothers W & TR Milburn in January 1928. Opening in October 1929 as one of the largest London Theatres with a seating capacity of 2835.
Hayles and Howe have enjoyed a ten year relationship with the Grade II listed Dominion Theatre in London. The team has carried out regular ceiling inspections, restoration and consolidation works whenever required. In 2014 following the closure of a long standing show the Nederlander Organisation decided to undertake an extensive restoration of this lovely, Neo-Renaissance 1920’s theatre. With Hayles and Howe as the nominated plastering contractor on the project.
The Theatres Trust covered the restoration and refurbishment of the Dominion in its Winter 2014 issue of Theatres Magazine. Mhora Samuel, the Trust’s Director is delighted that this refurbishment has won an award. It recognises the importance of bringing in appropriately skilled, experienced and competent crafts people. Securing the future of the nation’s important and unique historic theatres.
The judges comments included the following:
‘A very comprehensive refurbishment has been completed. The main auditorium required extensive work and now looks stunning. If the Architects W and TR Milburn could visit now they would see their Dominion Theatre as it was at the opening in 1929. Actually it possibly looks better now, it is very pleasing to the eye.’
